Starting out with cloth can feel overwhelming with so many options! Here's a quick guide to the main types.
Traditional cloth
Flats or terry squares: the classic cloth nappy. Absorbent fabric (terry, flannelette, hemp, bamboo or a blend) that you fold to fit and cover with a waterproof cover. Cost-effective, fast drying and fits all ages, but can be a bit fiddly.
Prefolds: layers of soft fabric folded into a pad and placed inside a waterproof cover. Less bulky than squares and quick to dry, though you may need a couple of sizes.
Fitted nappies: shaped like a disposable and made from absorbent layers, worn under a waterproof cover. Super absorbent and easy to put on, but they take longer to dry and are often sized.
Modern cloth nappies
Pocket nappies: a waterproof outer sewn to a soft inner, with a pocket you stuff with an insert. Easy to use and quick to dry, but you'll need to unstuff them before washing.
All-in-ones (AIO): the waterproof outer and absorbent inner are sewn together, so they're the closest thing to a disposable. Nothing to pull apart, but they take longer to dry.
All-in-twos (AI2) or snap-ins: a waterproof shell with absorbent inserts that snap in. They dry faster than AIOs, you can add boosters for extra absorbency, and you can swap just the insert at change time. Usually one-size, so a higher upfront cost but they last a long time.
